The Social Media Week Digest

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

This week, believe it or not, is Social Media Week.

As the website says:

“Social Media Week conferences take place simultaneously in multiple cities around the world. The aim of each event is to advance the use and understanding of social media in the corporate, public and non-profit sectors.”

From New York to Berlin, San Francisco to São Paulo and Toronto to London, across the globe people are coming together to ‘explore the profound impact that social media has on culture, business communications and society at large’.

Here in London, the home of 1000heads, there are events happening all week and – hashtag tracking aside – some might find it quite difficult to try and get to everything on the rather packed out event schedule. To aid those in their quest to consume as much knowledge as possible, 1000heads is hosting the official ‘Social Media Week Digest’, this Friday, from 10am at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts.

There are a couple of other events going on Friday morning, including Reputation Online’s ‘Crisis Management‘ session as well as a special Social Media Week Tuttle Club. However, having seen how quickly the tickets for these events have been snapped up, we think there might be scope for one more thing..

So if you’re free and fancy joining us – you’ll be made to feel very welcome indeed.

As our sign up page says:

The Social Media Week Digest does exactly what it says on the tin; by Friday morning at least some of you would have all had the chance to catch one of the aforementioned fantastic events and this end-of-the-week gathering is your opportunity to come together and share stories, anecdotes and generally catch up on some of the interesting things you’ve seen and done.

Come drink some coffee (on us) and have a chat about where we’re all headed next.

Tickets aren’t mandatory (get yours here), they just help us keep an eye on numbers etc…

See you Friday! :)

Thanks to ICA London for the super last minute providing of the venue, I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of the place very soon.

Join us for STA Travel’s World Traveller Internship launch party

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Tomorrow night sees the launch STA Travel’s World Traveller Internship, the next iteration of our long-standing, award-winning work with the innovative international travel brand.

We’re pretty excited. The World Traveller Internship will give two individuals free travel around the globe for three months, uncovering the lesser-seen beauty spots the world has to offer, adding their knowledge to the existing, passionate STA Travel community online and basically having a totally once-in-a-lifetime time. This is a sdeeply social scheme, with interns recording their trips via blog, video, photo and audio across a host of social media platforms – but it’s not exclusively for the web savvy, as we’ll be helping the winners make the most of all the best and latest tools out there.

Tempted?

Rules and requirements can be found on STA Travel’s World Traveller Internship pages and you can  get a taster of the vague (details are under wraps until tomorrow) yet still impressive itinerary here.

If a big bad social media adventure sounds like your thing, join us at the STA Travel Victoria store tomorrow night, Tuesday 26th Jan from 7:30. It’s an open invite so if you’d like to know more, or are already in the process of planning your application, come along and get involved. – the more the merrier.

Here’s a Wiki with the details and a guest list you can sign up to. It also includes links to our collaborative Spotify playlist for the evening and the STA travelbuzz post about the internship.

If you need anything else just send an email or tweet to the STA travelbuzz team.

Tuttle hits 1000heads…

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

This morning we had guests in the office. Lots of them. This was due to the fact that today brought the meeting of London’s Tuttle Club to our offices on Great Windmill Street. If you don’t know about Tuttle, it’s “a loose association of people finding a way of working better together both online and off“. And it’s awesome.

To give you an idea of what the morning was like (well, one quite specific take on it) here’s an Audioboo from the inimitable Benny Crime

For some other takes (as if you’d need them) here is the morning in pictorial form…

(Yes, those are Twitter and Flickr cupcakes)

and via the marvels of Twitter…

So there you go! Got a taste for it? Next week, it’s the same drill again – our offices, 10 -12 -  so do come along, and do say hello!

The state of social media in Asia

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

From most commentary you see on the web, you’d be forgiven for thinking that word of mouth was invented by the US and UK, and that all social media is rooted in western psychology and the English language. However, as a global agency, we’re keenly aware of the opportunities and challenges of working with WOM in different continents and countries, ensuring campaigns are hyperlocal but with a consistent worldwide reach.

In this vein we exchange a series of guest posts with global WOM experts  - see Spolem’s post for us on social networking in Poland, and ours for them on our pan-European work for Castrol – and also arrange virtual events on Tangler whereby those embedded in online communities around the world can share their insights, hopes and challenges.

Our latest panel has been on the state of social media in Asia and we’ve put together a top-level summary of the discussion below. Have a look through and join our next WOM Expert Group on Latin America, taking place this afternoon and on Friday, 2.30 – 5.30pm.

Tuttle hits New York (via 1000heads)

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

UK based social media types will be familiar with London Tuttle (aka the Social Media Café) – a Friday morning must for socialising and bandying about genius ideas over cappuccino at the ICA (God, we’re all such clichés).

Last year we at 1000heads created its southern counterpart Oxford Tuttle, which has been moving from strength to strength. So we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be hosting the first ever New York Tuttle this Thursday.

Helmed by our NY ‘Head, the lovely Dan Silvers, the event will be a must for anyone passionate about word of mouth and social media who wants to connect with new people, learn, share, or just have a natter. Creative, strategic, development, and geeky types are more than welcome – oh, and regular nice people, too.

Head over to The Ginger Man, 11 East 36th St at 6pm this Thursday 15th October – full details here. This should be the start of something very good indeed.

STA Travel win ‘best use of social media’ in Travolution Awards

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

We’re delighted to announce that our longstanding client STA Travel has been awarded ‘best use of social media’ at the Travolution Awards 2009.

Celia Pronto of STA Travel collects her award from Ian Taylor, Editor of Travolution

Up against such competition as ‘Best Job in the World’ by Tourism Queensland and Tripadvisor Facebook apps, the judges -a committee of senior people involved in the online travel industry across operator, supplier and agency websites, search engines and technology companies – praised STA Travel for their particularly comprehensive, integrated and customer-led approach:

“Once again, STA Travel is a leading light in this area, ensuring that it engages people in as many of the relevant channels to its target audience as possible. Most importantly, customers engage with one another AND the brand.”

They couldn’t have put it better. We’ve been working with STA Travel for almost 2 years now to both help establish their brand voice in social media but also encourage lasting peer to peer advocacy with our STA Travelbuzz and STA Explorers initiatives. Last year the 1000heads/STA Travel team won the WOM UK/WARC Word of Mouth Marketing Awards for Best Targeting, so it’s great to now get acknowledgement from the travel industry too.

If you want to find out more about how we could do the same for you, lets go and get a cup of tea.

1000heads virtual events

Friday, September 18th, 2009

More blog upates this week as we’ve added an 1000heads virtual events tab to our front page. We’ve been running virtual events for clients such as Nokia and Microsoft for ages. They provide a platform where those who can’t attend an offline event can still gather, watch live streaming and exclusive content, and network and chat as it all happens. They’re an essential part of our approach that dissolves the boundaries between off and online, and they’ve been a brilliant driver of collaboration, content creation and WOM around brands.

But we also run them for ourselves, tackling interesting questions and covering essential WOM events, so bookmark our new page and join in whenever you can – they’re a great way to meet some likeminded movers and shakers in the social world.  This week we’ve been running a WOM Expert Group discussion on social media in Asia. Have a browse below, don’t forget to keep checking in for new topics, and let us know if you’d like to see a particular event relevant to you.

1000heads is voted President of WOM UK

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

I’m delighted to announce this morning that, as 1000heads WOM Evangelist, I’ve been voted in as the new President of WOM UK. WOM UK is the organisation the represents the word of mouth industry across the UK, aimed at establishing best practice and ethical guidelines, as well as educating marketers and clients alike about the benefits, methods and developments of WOM, and showcasing the best and most innovative companies and case studies operating out there.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to help spread the word and good work of a relatively young industry, working alongside international sister organisations such as the US-based WOMMA. I’m looking forward to collaborating with and learning from the great agencies and brands already on board (including such diverse members as Nielsen, Edelman, IPA, Unilever, Royal Mail and The Guardian) and  bubbling with ideas about how to make WOM UK more relevant and dynamic and than ever. Whether you’re a dedicated WOM agency, an established company looking to branch out into conversational marketing, or any business, institution or brand wanting to approach WOM in the right way from the start, membership is a must. More to come!
